Username versus display name
Discord separates the two, and they follow different rules. The username - your unique handle - is restricted to lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. Unicode styles will be rejected there outright.
The display name, per-server nickname, and status are the fields that accept styled text. That distinction explains most of the confusion about whether Discord "supports" fancy fonts: the fields you can style and the field people search are not the same one.
Reading a name at member-list size
Names in the member list render small and thin. Styles that survive this are the high-contrast ones: bold, gothic, small caps, and monospace. Light script and multi-mark decorated styles turn into visual noise at that size.
Nicknames also cap at 32 characters. Decorated styles that use combining marks eat that budget quickly, so a name that looks short can still be rejected.
Mentions, search, and moderation
Autocomplete matches the characters in the name. A fully styled display name is harder for people to @ mention, because they cannot type the characters. Keeping a recognisable plain fragment - or a short styled name people can select from the list - avoids this.
Many servers also run moderation bots that flag or auto-rename accounts using unusual Unicode, since the same trick is used for impersonation and filter evasion. If a server rejects your name, that is usually why.
Clan tags and server branding
Short symbol frames around a plain name are the reliable pattern for clan tags. They read clearly, survive small rendering, cost few characters, and stay mentionable.
For channel names, Discord lowercases and strips many characters automatically, so styling there rarely survives. Category headers and role names give you more room.
