Why bold Unicode survives copy and paste

Normal bold is formatting: a text field marks a range as bold and the app renders it. Paste that into a plain-text field and the formatting is discarded, because it was never part of the text.

Bold Unicode is different. ๐ is its own character, U+1D401, distinct from B. Nothing needs to remember that it is bold, so the appearance travels with the string into fields that support no formatting at all.

Bold Unicode survives platforms that strip normal formatting.

Serif, sans, and italic variants

Unicode encodes several bold alphabets separately: bold serif (๐‡๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ), bold sans-serif (๐—›๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ), bold italic, and bold script. They are unrelated ranges, so support can vary slightly between them on older devices.

Bold sans-serif is usually the safest for interfaces, since it matches the sans-serif fonts most apps already use. Bold serif reads as more formal and stands out more against a sans-serif background.

Using emphasis without overusing it

Bold only signals importance when most of the text is not bold. A fully bolded caption has no emphasis at all, just a heavier baseline, and reads as shouting.

Bold the phrase that matters - a price, a date, a call to action - and leave the rest plain. Two or three bold words in a caption do more than a bold paragraph.

The accessibility caveat

Screen readers do not necessarily announce these as letters. Depending on the reader, ๐ may be read as "mathematical bold capital B" or skipped entirely, which can render a bolded sentence unusable in audio.

Because of this, bold Unicode is best as decoration on top of information that also exists in plain text. Do not put the only copy of an important detail in styled characters.

Quick Reference

Bold variants and where each performs best
PlacementRecommendationWhy
Bold sans-serif Widest support Matches the sans-serif interface of most apps.
Bold serif More formal Stands out more against sans-serif surroundings.
Bold italic Emphasis with movement Good for a caption hook or a quoted phrase.
Bold script Decorative emphasis Heavier than light script, so it survives small sizes.
Bold gothic Gaming and dramatic tone Very high contrast but harder to read at length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bold text a real font?

No. It is a separate set of Unicode characters that look bold, so nothing is installed and nothing is stripped.

Can I use bold text in comments?

Yes, anywhere Unicode text is accepted, including comments, bios, captions, and messages.

Why does bold work where formatting does not?

The boldness is part of the character itself rather than metadata attached to a range of text.

Which bold style is most compatible?

Bold sans-serif. It has the widest support and matches most app interfaces.

Is bold Unicode accessible?

Not reliably. Screen readers may mispronounce or skip it, so keep important information in plain text too.
